I am going to Germany next week - Frankfurt, Berlin for sure, maybe Stuttgart & Munich. Has anybody swum in any of those places?
I would like to find something that is fairly simple to get find/use as my family thinks I am crazy to want to swim everywhere we go. Last year they wanted to go to the beach so I chose Ft. Lauderdale so I could workout with FLAQ at the hall of fame pool. I worked out and was back at the hotel before any of them got out of bed.
Thanks in advance.
If you get to Munich, definitely swim in the 1972 Olympic pool. It is very easy to get to, only about 4E + locker, LCM, and open from like 6am to 11pm. Plus while you're out there, make a stop at BMW Welt. Check my blog postings from last Dec, I swam in the pool a couple of times.
In Berlin you also have the Olympic pool (from the 1936 olympics), it is outside. There's also a floating pool on the river, but it sounds more like a party boat.
If you can find a contact with the Army, try the Andrews barracks pool in Berlin near the Grunewald. It is a relic almost as old as the Olympic pool in a former cadet school, and is very nice (indoors). My Father swam there in 1950 in an Army swim meet.
There is also a public (indoor) 50m pool in Schoneberg (can't figure out how to put an umlaut over the o), where I swam in the German Masters long event Nationals in 1986.
I worked in Munich for a summer a couple of years ago. In addition to the Olympic Pool, definitly check out Dantebad. It's very easy to get to as well (U-Bahn to Gern) and cost 3 Euros in 2008. Outdoor 50 Meter pool good for laps.
Also, in Berlin, you might want to check out the floating pool on the river. It's pretty cool and might be somewhere that you family can enjoy while you do laps.
