I thought that too, but you just never know - I lucked out on an 800 SCM free in 2004 and came 1st of 3 entrants in my age group - it was the last event of the meet, and not my best event. I'll not be a national champ again any time soon though.
Twice at Nationals I've come in 2nd (800 and 1000). I feel like the brides maid and never the bride. The first time I came in 2nd I took 22 sec off my best time and the 1st place girl went almost a full min slower than hers. She only beat me by 2 sec. I was watching her finish and hoping she would slow down. Darn! hee-hee
