Rob Butcher stirring it up on the Morning Swim Show!

www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../24226.asp Changing the face of masters swimming... Thank God! Not everyone will agree... another reason I do love being an American!
  • I'm pretty stoked about 2012 long course nationals. That is going to be fantastic.
  • It would be pretty cool to have Nationals right after Trials. Nice! I can get done my LCM season in Mid July for a change, very nice. That other thing that he talked about won't be popular with the "folks" out there. So, USMS wants to be on the "pot" for another yards season.
  • I just put my B70 in the deep freezer for protection.
  • Hmmmmmm.... I, for one, am sick of tech suits, but I'll go with the flow. It would be nice to have the same suit for all 3 courses. Rob always seems to be very well spoken :agree:

I think this will likely be the first LCM Nationals I'll be able to compete in because the timing will be great, but the added bonus of the Trials pool is even sweeter.
  • I just put my B70 in the deep freezer for protection. Likewise! Go Rob, go Rob, go Rob! Love the idea of keeping them just for SCY.
  • Why? For the same reason I've always loved the suits: they're fun, they're fast, I love to swim in them, and I prefer max coverage & max technology. I find no appeal personally in swimming in slower suits. And I see no reason why SCY can't be segregated from the FINA distances. It's our own special fiefdom, and we get to make the rules. For the record, though, I've already swum in FINA legal kneeskins in two meets. I can, and have, certainly move(d) forward without any whining.
  • Fort, didn't say you were whining. Asked why usms can't let this be a dead issue now. I know you didn't. And in fact, shockingly, I haven't whined at all! No decision is written in stone or cut and dry. I don't understand why it has to be a "dead issue" if there is support for or a valid reason for change. Just my viewpoint; uniformity for the sake of uniformity holds no appeal for me. And I find it kinda compelling that SCY could be unique and feature a different jazzy set of rules than the other courses. Those who hate SCY and tech suits (e.g., Tom) could swim FINA distances and those who love tech suits can concentrate on SCY if they are so inclined. Or everyone can do both without whining. Could be the best of both worlds and offer the most options.
  • Great interview. I certainly don't agree with keeping the tech suits, but the 2012 long course meet is a great idea. I was also impressed with Rob being right on the ball promoting masters swimming as a fitness activity and not just for competition toward the end of the interview.
  • It's great to read these comments about Rob's interview on the show. We'd love to see these also on our story at swimmingworld.com. Ahelee's already contributed some great remarks, as has already been noted. We've got another Masters-related interview on Memorial Day, when Rich Abrahams talks about setting seven national records at nationals, and gives some details on his dryland training. As a Masters swimmer, I'm definitely looking forward to 2012. I'll already be there, and not sure what shape I'll be in physically after a week of working for Swimming World at Trials. But having taken a couple of dips in the pool in 2008, I can tell you it's a very nice experience that should not be missed. And with 13,000 seats available, there won't be any shortage of space!
