Right trapezius (?) muscle getting sore

I am a semi-serious swimmer, have built up to swimming about 3 times a week over the last year (was doing ~2 times a week until 2 months ago). In order to improve my glide and general form I have been trying to swim slowly, and also do drills such as one arm only. In both cases I am extending my arms forward (before the pull) for a longer period of time than normal, and the muscle on my right side, in between neck and shoulder (I believe it is called the trapezius muscle), starts to get sore. It gets so bad that I have to pull in my right arm such that the elbow is bent instead of straight. I think the issue is more a result of a problem with my swimming form than the drills themselves, but I am not sure what might be causing it. I am right handed and notice my left pull is a bit weaker, not sure if that is related. Has anyone had this problem before? If there are any exercises to help, or any common problem with form that could lead to this, please let me know. Thanks!
