With about a month and and a half to go....I need some advice on a training plan.....
It is March 30th and I am just getting in the water. I really need help getting ready. I am not from a pure swimming background so I do not know how to get ready for a meet. I will swim 50 free, 100 free, 50 ***.
My times are pretty good... but I want to peek right.
THoughts? Any help out there?
THanks in advance.
while I do come froma swimming background, i can offer some advice on how I will be planning my training for the next 7 weeks after taking a few (much needed) weeks off.
I always approach the first week or two back trying to get a "feel" for the water again. I feel all out of sync and need some time to just swim into a rythem. i keep the yardage lower and do a lot of drill work. you might want to focus on freestyle drills since that seems to be the mains troke you plan to do at nats. being a breaststroker, i normally avoid doing any *** (or fly for that matter) the first few days until i stop feeling so sluggish.
I will steadily build the yardage over the next two weeks while i get my strokes back to normal, and right around mid april I will really start to crank out the yards (i am doing a lot of distance events at nats, another possible difference in approaches to training). I will start resting 10 days out. with such a small window of training, i can neither afford nor prefer a longer taper.
the big keys are to start small and don't overdue it. once you feel good, then try to really "put in the work". doing the sprints like you are, this is the time to do a lot of sprint work (25s, 50s, 100s repeat working on turnover, strong kick). add in some breaststroke kick (working on snapping that kick liek you would in a sprint). Since every person can train a little different, I am sure there are as many people who might agree with a regiment such as mine as there are who might disagree. this is just how i will approach it. hope the insight helps.
