You should come out for this summer's Fast Times in the Cool Pines swim meet (www.azlmsc.org/.../2010 Cool_pines_Meet_entry_form_2.pdf).
My daughter's club team is spending a week this summer training at NAU. I'm so jealous; I'd love to coordinate a training trip there right prior to tapering and then come down to sea level to swim fast!
What does a 200+ event feel like up there in Flagstaff? That's gotta be agonizing by the end.
What does a 200+ event feel like up there in Flagstaff? That's gotta be agonizing by the end.I have no idea. I've never even trained at altitude so this should be a treat. I'm thinking that meet will be my sprint meet for the summer.:)
I swam a practice in Colorado Springs a few years back(not at the olympic training center) About 500 yards into the practice, I couldn't figure out why I felt so winded, until the coach ask me if I had ever swam at altitude before.
I realized at that moment why I was struggling so much.
Great! I've bookmarked the Colorado masters site for future reference! Very funny posts on high altitude swimming! Breckenridge as a base since we just bought a condo there! I love the Breck Rec center. The dinky pool is PERFECT to practice turns! There is a very sharp drop off to the deep end, so I start there and hurl myself towards the wall at top speed! My regular pools don't have that steep point, so turn work isn't as effective, since you can't get your max speed up going into the wall.
I think I am guilty of somewhat hijacking this thread, so back on topic....what can I say about South Central Zones? It was AWESOME!!! One of the most awesome swims was watching Laura Glass go (by me, and she was GONE!) 23.2 in the 50 free. Then she went 22.60 relay split. Then 23.1 relay lead off. Her previous best was 23.7. I should cross post this with that improvement thread!
What an inspiration!
Colonies Zones Champs start tomorrow. If you are going, I will see you there. Just look for the only male not wearing a cheating suit! :)
I am stoked that this is the last Short Course meet of the season for me. :applaud:

Rich,
1. Was this meet at high altitude? There's no adjustment for times in masters, is there?
2. Are there any meets near Breckenridge? Near would be within a 2 hour drive.
Michelle,
The meet was at the University of Denver, so about 5,200' or so. It is my understanding that there are some altitude adjustments in masters for making qual. times, but not for records or rankings. I may be wrong.
Breckenridge is easily within 2 hours of Denver. Go to comsa.org to check out the meet schedule. I think there is a small LCM meet in early June and another sometime in July. They have a public recreation center in Breckenrisge with a lap pool. Try doing a workout at 9,000'!

I live at sea level. My parents used to live in Frisco, and we would use the rec center when visiting them. One of my first times there I decided to take some easy laps in the laned off section of the 25 yard pool. I did a couple of easy 50s with some open turns, then gently built a 25 and flipped.
I'm pretty sure that's as close as I've ever come to drowning. I honestly wasn't sure I was going to make it to the surface in time, and came up red, spluttering, and completely out of gas.
I generally stuck to the hot tub and play pools on subsequent visits.
I've done workouts in the Avon (CO) rec center and they're brutal. You start out OK, but that lack of oxygen hits you like a runaway locomotive. Avon is substantially lower than Breck, too, probably under 8,000 feet. I had more success working out at the rec center pool in Jackson, Wyoming. Pretty nice pool and the altitude is a little lower. Around 6,000 feet, I think.

I did a workout once in Flagstaff at NAU's awesome pool. I rode my bike there from my brother's house and had to call him to pick me and the bike up afterward. That altitude is a killer. Flag is about 6900 feet.
