Do they significantly reduce resistance?
Or are they just for protection and visibility?
I am uncomfortable in goggles, but I wear them to work out because I don't want to be red-eyed all day. I would rather not race in them. I actually like the 'cocoon' feeling I get around my head without them. It helps me focus.

Yes and both.
Think of someone blowing hard in your eye...you'll want googles. Plus you'll need to be able to judge distance for turns.
