500m Endurance

Hi guys, new to the forum. I'm basically a new swimmer though I have swimmed incorrectly all my life, and I'm comfortable in water, but my techinques are sloppy, and I've been looking around online to correct that, and I'm about to start working with a coach. My question is how feasible is it to build my endurance to pass the lifeguarding test by the end of April so I can lifeguard this summer. Last time I was in the pool I could swim about 100 meters before I was totally winded and maxed out.

  • Breathing is THE key for swimming endurance. All dry land sports/activities, you can breathe whenever you want and not even think about it. Swimming is where you HAVE to have proper breathing technique to be successful. Things to key on: 1) exhale air thru your nose (preferred method) or your mouth while your head is underwater. This will help to clear the CO2 and give you the best chance for refilling your lungs with good air. 2) Don't 'gasp' for air when your take a breath. Try to take a strong inhalation that lasts for 1-2 seconds.
