USMS final decision on tech suits for masters

FINA issued Ruled,www.usms.org/.../showpost.php Soon the USMS rules committee will issue their ruling. SCM & LCM seems to be a done deal, the 2010 seasons started on Jan 1, 2010 & the rule began on Jan 1, 2010. SCY is an American thing. The 2009 - 2010 SCY season began on June 1st 2009 and ends on May 31st 2010. Will the new suit rules take effect immediately or at the end of this season? I've heard rumours we might be able to wear full body suits at 2010 SCY Nats. Look forward to finding out what the USMS ruling will be for SCY. 1/15/10 FINA BUREAU CONSIDERS SWIMWEAR RULES FOR MASTERS The FINA Bureau has considered Masters swimwear rules. The USMS Rules Committee will learn the results shortly and then will immediately reconsider the USMS swimwear rules in cooperation with the USMS Executive Committee. All USMS members will be notified of any changes to USMS swimwear rules and the effective date. Regardless of any changes to the USMS swimwear rules, the June 1, 2009 USMS swimwear interpretations will apply for the duration of the One Hour Postal Swim being conducted in January 2010. from www.usms.org/.../20100115swimsuits.pdf you'll find the update at http://www.usms.org/rules/
  • If you want to submit 2010 times for the USA-S SWIMS database I'm sure you need to wear a suit that is legal according to USA Swimming Rules. bet there will will be some sort or affadavit, might be a good idea to drop by the meet officials and remind the refs before each swim, "I am wearing a suit that is USA swimming approved." then twirl, spin a 360. Like: Men: Speedo FS PRO Jammers or TYR Tracer Light Jammer Women: Tyr Tracer Light Short John or the Speedo FS Pro Recordbreaker Kneeskin does anyone know if this will impact our ability to get our times submitted to the USA-S SWIMS database? for SCY of course.
  • While I wish I would have gotten around to swimming Masters before this winter, I feel fortunate to have missed the tech suit era. Much as one feels fortunate when driving by a multi-car pile-up on the freeway. Boy, do I second that emotion. ;) The last time I swam competitively, I wore a Jantzen suit complete with modesty panel that was more of a drag suit than a competition suit, and that was the best suit I could afford in 1971!! I'm tempted to buy one of the discounted tech suits just to see what the fuss has been about. But from what most elite swimmers have been saying, they won't miss putting them on, which dissuades me immediately.

The fuss about putting on the suits, IMHO, is over-rated unless you're really going for maximum compression (downsizing suit too much) or in a suit like a LZR, which was prone to rip and had limited lifespan. Buy a BlueSeventy. A discounted one now will last you through the SCY season and they're very durable.
  • Debbie- I just bought one for my hubby. They're "only" $100 now. That's the price of two practice suits. It will last forever. You will feel amazing in the water. Definitely do it. The first time putting it on is not easy, but every time after that is much easier. It takes most people I know about 15 min to put it on the first time. You want to go slowly and be careful not to rip it (I trim my nails first). Do it. Do it. Do it. :applaud:

Establishing a clearly defined procedure (to navigate this particular mess) is the only way I'm going to see this as fair to those who want their times in SWIMS. Make it straight forward, and understood by all. There should be a deliberate effort to make sure this group of people can get their times in from their taper meet. If the times don't make it in, people lose opportunities to swim so that others can swim in tech suits.

I would imagine that USA-S might come back with only allowing times from USMS swimmers done in USA-S meets until our suit policies are aligned. IMHO, there's a significantly larger number of USMS swimmers who want to still compete through USMS Nationals in tech suits than there are USMS swimmers who want to get times into USA-S SWIMS.
  • At least I know for sure I'll get to wear my hydrospeed II at next week's meet. Never used a tech suit at, let alone attended, a meet before. Now I can suffer the loss in June with everyone else.
  • Do you think this includes "athletic supporters" or "jock straps"?: I would assume so, but then again I can't say I've seen too many men wearing a jock under their swimsuit, so not sure it's much of an issue!
  • The ruling is perfectly fine for USA/USMS dual-sanctioned meets, or for USMS times submitting to USA Swimming. I realize that, what I meant is that those swims must be done without the suits (ie, must conform to USA-S rules), which is now a disadvantage. I do wonder one thing. At nationals meets I like to sign the form that submits my times to the SWIMS database, so that later I have the option to those times to enter USA-S meets. It didn't seem like a big deal to do this in the past, but now they'll have to be tracking suits in order to comply. Hopefully they'll still do it in Atlanta.
  • Well, I need to get a new jammer since one of my taper meets is a USA-S meet so I don't care about getting a tech suit or have an extra 100 bucks or whatever it costs to get a b70. People should move on no matter what the rule states. On the USA-S to USMS. I guess that the times might not get into the SWIMS Database or the meet director/official might have to verify what you are in at the meet or something.
