USMS final decision on tech suits for masters

FINA issued Ruled,www.usms.org/.../showpost.php Soon the USMS rules committee will issue their ruling. SCM & LCM seems to be a done deal, the 2010 seasons started on Jan 1, 2010 & the rule began on Jan 1, 2010. SCY is an American thing. The 2009 - 2010 SCY season began on June 1st 2009 and ends on May 31st 2010. Will the new suit rules take effect immediately or at the end of this season? I've heard rumours we might be able to wear full body suits at 2010 SCY Nats. Look forward to finding out what the USMS ruling will be for SCY. 1/15/10 FINA BUREAU CONSIDERS SWIMWEAR RULES FOR MASTERS The FINA Bureau has considered Masters swimwear rules. The USMS Rules Committee will learn the results shortly and then will immediately reconsider the USMS swimwear rules in cooperation with the USMS Executive Committee. All USMS members will be notified of any changes to USMS swimwear rules and the effective date. Regardless of any changes to the USMS swimwear rules, the June 1, 2009 USMS swimwear interpretations will apply for the duration of the One Hour Postal Swim being conducted in January 2010. from www.usms.org/.../20100115swimsuits.pdf you'll find the update at http://www.usms.org/rules/

Who's claiming this? If anything last year's suit race encouraged this train of thought. All you ever heard was "it's the suit." There was no way you could make an apples to apples comparison anymore. And when that happens the sport is drifting into joke territory, IMO. For one, a number of journalist openly make the claim. I have heard it on pool decks at a number of meets. Why do we have to make apples to apples comparisons? When they went from full body wools suits to skimpy suits, one can't make comparsions due to fabric fifferences. When freestylers were allowed to put their head under water, they couldn't compare. When freestyle and later backstrokers were allowed to flip without touching the wall with their hands, it became impossible to for comparsions. The underwater dolphin kicks alter how fliers and backstrokers trained and raced. When the put limits on the distances, that made it difficult to make comparisons. History is full of the sport making changes that make it impossible for apples to apples comparison. Why should we worry about it with the suits.
  • So, I am curious to how many of us that think usms made the wrong decision in still allowing will use them since other people will still use them. This probably isn't what you are implying, but I don't think folks who disagree with the ruling but will still wear tech suits are necessarily hypocritical: 1) folks may want to get their money's worth out of the suits 2) they may want to be able to compare times to previous swims 3) they may want to win I realize I've been a bit outspoken on this topic in terms of the negative impacts of the ruling. Although I've competed in jammers since last May and will do so in Atlanta, I can't blame folks for using a currently legal suit. I've had only limited experience with the suits so I suppose it's easier for me to start over. But with respect to Atlanta- if you're wearing a tech suit, you'd better beat me. :chug:

Our recovery time, no matter how fit we are, is not comparable. Unless you are an uber swimmer like Professor Stevenson. I for one am not eager to "see what I can do" in jammers. I already have a pretty good idea. I forgot, I just need to train harder and eat better.

I forgot, I just need to train harder and eat better. True dat! I saw what I did in practice suits. It sux. Everyone and their mother tells me to train smarter, train less and eat more. That sux even more than the loss of the suits. However, I am getting some serious enjoyment out of all this boo-hooing. Very cathartic!

See, this is where the tech suit argument comes off the rails totally. Why are you limiting your disdain for modern training devices to the suit? Goggles clearly are a bigger advantage both to training and racing. If you want a baseline, train au-naturale. How does a suit make me go artificially faster? That's ridiculous, I'm still swimming the race. I like going faster because I don't like going slower. If I'm training hours and hours a weeks I'm gonna buy the things that maximize that time - a good club, a good suit, a good coach, etc. If I have two clubs near me and one costs 10 times more than the other and I chose that club, are you gonna get all pissy about that too and take that away? Look, the rules are written, I have six months left and then we can all don our paper suits circa 1981 and talk about the glory days of the suits. Where's the Fort when I need her? I'm not Fort but I agree with you!

I'm not Fort but I agree with you! Word. And I'm thinking of taking it even one step further than AquaGnad and wearing the suit post 6/1 on occasion. In my mind if I'm seeded next to ex-NCAA Div 1 6 foot 2 man, I wear the suit and that evens things up a bit. Ha! And this is now causing me to mourn the loss of my suit even more - what great races I had in some of the distance events with those ex-collegiate swimmer men. We all knew I had a cheat suit and they were in briefs, but the races were still verrrrrrrrrry exciting. Right. . . but I should just train more, eat less, and heck, grow a penis.
  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......sorry....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA You've just proven to me that pro-techies are generally despicable people.

What came first the chicken or the egg. "Condensation of steam" = water
  • I don't understand why anyone would train for Atlanta, spend the money to go and then decide not to maximize that training by wearing a post-June legal jammer or brief. Why not take full advantage of the suits while we can? I figure it will be a full 5-8 years before they are back, and, by that point, I'll be even older than hell. Taking some grand jihad stance now against the suits means your are either A) a cheap skate or B) a doofus. And, I consider myself a swimming purist because all sport purists know that sports evolve, not get stuck and mired in the past.
  • Here is my question for those of us that think USMS has made the wrong decision by allowing the tech suits to continue though the scy season. How many of us will use a bodysuit for USMS SCY meets and how many will start using 2010 legal suits? I intend to continue to use a bodysuit at least for taper meet(s). I think whatever is allowed by the rules is fair game, but that doesn't mean I always have to agree with the rules.
