Poll: Use of Suit Dryers

Due to some recent questions at our YMCA I wonder what people think: The Suit Dryer (Water Extractor) is only for swim suits. Anything that is damp or sweaty can be put in the Suit Dryer (i.e. sweaty tee shirt, sweaty socks, etc.)

One story I heard that has stopped me from using the spinners, was putting swim diapers in the spinners so they could be used again. Horrendous! I find the suit spinner very useful. If you hang a wet suit it can easily get stretched out, losing its shape. I am very surprised to hear these horrible stories of abusing the spinner. On another note, what do you think of the towels provided by the facilities? Do they disinfect them? I think they simply put them in the washer. Some seem very dirty. One pool I went uses very dark-colored towels, perhaps on purpose, so that you can't tell how dirty they are. :(

Ohmygod, I had NO IDEA anyone used suit dryers for anything else! How revolting. :afraid:
  • This is how they get broken ! Blue jeans or beach towels were not ment to be in them!!
  • I don't use them. I think they weaken the fibers of the suit. I rinse my suits out in cold water and let them drip dry where ever they end up. My suits last forever too!
  • Suit dryers are a complete & utter waste. Has no one ever heard of evaporation? Throw your wet suit in your bag, hang it up at home and -- voila! -- dry suit with zero extra energy wastage. That's because you live in Arizona where the humidity is nearly zero most of the year. When you live in other parts of the country, it can take days for a towel or a swimsuit to dry by evaporation. For me, I leave my swim stuff in the car (that way I never forget something) my stuff never dries out, especially if I don't use the spinner.

My gym bag is noticeably lighter when I run my long-line suit thru the spinner--I LOVE it. I don't notice any problems with polyester--suit going strong after 2 years, but it may be harder on nylon/spandex that's getting hammered by chlorine anyway. I had a brand-name swim top that gave out in 3 weeks this fall...chlorine + spinner? who knows.

I would like to think that we ladies are too sensible to do anything gross with the spin dryer but last night just after spinning my suit I saw someone put in her washcloth and mesh sponge. Yech.

A little while back, I would hear the spinner while I was swimming eventhough no one had been swimming. Then I saw "Usually Older" guys rinsing off their gym clothes in the shower and putting them in the spinner. I quit using the spinner when my wife told me there was a "Don't put swimming Diapers in the spinner" sign at a Y we used to go to.

It is shocking what some swimmers place in the dryers, after seeing a soiled child's bathing suit go in the dryer! I never use them.
