  • just looking through this list in the 50 bk he listed 28.30s Natalie Coughlin, USA/Cal World Championships Melbourne 03-27-07 (Note: 50 split off world record-settring 59.44 100 meter backstroke clocking. (Note: Olympic gold-medalist, 100 meter backstroke ; World Champion, 2001, ’05-’07) but the problem is she probably flipped to her feet and didn't touch with her hand so the time shouldn't count Ande: You are correct and I should have caught that when I made corrections to this document over on the Swimming World website. Natalie was not the world champion in this event in 2005 and under :28.30 time I should have thought about this because the finish in backstroke is different than the turn finish because the swimmer must touch the wall while on the back. Any masters swimmer who visits here will read about this because we have discussed it many times. This :59.44 swim was done in the final and Natalie got out to a great first 50 and Laura Manaudou made a move on the second 50 and almost caught Natalie but did not. I like yourself and millions of others that watched this on TV and saw this race and saw the 50 turn finish which was not done correctly on the back for the tiime to count for a 50 back swim but done correctly for a 100 meter swim and the shoulders turned vertical past the *** in a continuous motion so this was not a legal finish for a 50 back swim. I have always wondered which one of these were faster for a 50 finish? I suppose you could test the both finishes for yourself and see which one is. It obviously is slower for a 100 race and that is why swimmers just use this in a 100 race just to get the 50 split time to count. I would say to go over to the Swimming World website and report this error but to my dismay I saw this time listed on the FINA Swimming site as a legitimate swim and it was ranked 3rd in the world for 2007. This is not consistent with USA Rule 101.4.3 on Turns and 101.4.4 on Finishes. So to make sure I was not missing something I went to the FINA Rule book and found about the exact language in SW 6.4 on turns and SW 6.5 on finishes. So someone made an error here and you caught it. I think Bill Bell was referencing the world lists that FINA has and that Swim News has which both publish this swim as 3rd in the world behind Yang of China at :28.09 and Leila Vaziri at :28.16 . I don't believe USA Swimming has rankings for the 50 of strokes in the Open Division so this is probably why this was not caught. This is not to say Natalie Coughlin could not do this time because who knows, with a proper backstroke finish this 28.30 could be faster or slower but probably faster given that she has gone a :27.08 SCM time back in 2002.
