I was just wondering, how many of you typically enter the maximum number of events that you can? I always do. One of our new coaches wants us to try and focus more on our "stronger events" and skip the other events. I usually like to see how well I might do in a event I haven't done in awhile.
It usually depends on the format of the meet. I typically try to focus on a specific events throughout the year, therefore I try my best to enter my "focus" events in every meet. However if there is not sufficient rest in between events, then I choose only my favorites or those events that give me adequate time to rest.
Also, if it is important to score points for the team, then I may enter more events and not be as concerned about going for be
Also another approach I sometimes take is to enter the max, but be prepared to scratch if I come to the meet with the need to focus on specific events.
The most important thing to me is that I have fun. Sometimes if I enter too many races it is not fun...
Thanks for the input!! I think that I will start realy paying attention to my events rather than the maximum. Except for maybe our SCY State meet in Feb. where the team points will be good.
My theory on this topic is evolving. I like to swim more events, at the expense of time, I supsect. I will reserve one or two meets a year for events I really want to do well in. It's just no fun to go to a meet and swim once or twice in 4 hours so I'll swim 3-4.
Of course, wookie made me his zipper wench in Orlando so I spent half my time zipping and unzipping his rubber suit.
More often than not, I max out my entries. I figure I get to maybe 6 to 8 pool meets on a great year, I've blocked the time out of my schedule to be there, sometimes bought plane flights, etc., so I may as well get my money's worth. Sometimes I regret this when the events are too close together, but generally I don't. I will limit the events slightly if it's a taper meet, but still do 3 to 4 per session (except Nationals where the max event limit, IMHO, sucks).
Rarely do I. Usually I do the 400 IM and any other long distance events and with those, I need fewer other events. So for a 1 day meet, I usually only do 4 events. I'd rather do quality over quantity (not that quality always comes out! but I try).
I guess because I am not a stud in any event I kind of like to swim a lot of events. There is a rumor that one of the teams down here in SC. volunteers his coaching time but all his swimmers must swim the maximum amount (including the 1650/1500). Sounds crazy and I probably shouldn't spread rumors.
Newbie question (and something I have been wondering since deciding I might try a meet this year)-- how do you determine whether there is enough time between events? Obviously, I know you would not want to swim events that are scheduled back-to-back, but what about events that have one, two, or three events in between? How do you decide if that is "enough time" to recover for the next event or not?
My maxim on this: there's ALWAYS enough time between events. Come on, Masters Studs and Studesses (Studettes?) ... we go back to back crap in workout all day long ... enter the events you want to swim regardless of how much rest you'll actually get.
I get edgy & antsy sitting on the sidelines ... after your standard 300/400 warmdown (10 minutes?) and optional towel off, what else do you need between events?
