Flip Turns and Starts

Hi All- So, have identified that I will compete in FY2010 and practice is going well. But, I don't know all the new flipturns or starts. So much has changed since I last swam:confused: At any rate, some of my team mates are willing to work with me, but was wondering if there is any resource that outlines the new starts and turns? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. - Sharon

  • Hey - thanks for the advice. What I meant more specifically, are the new starts off the blocks and also the new backstroke flip turns. Will check out the videos - but agree that one on one help might be best. Plan on hitting up some of the my team mates for that and the coach. Thanks again! S Sharon, Not sure what you mean by 'new starts off the blocks', by that do you mean that you are unsure how as you have never used blocks before? For the backstroke turn, don't let it scare you. The backstroke flip turn is just a freestyle flip turn with a couple of restrictions. 1 - As you approach the wall, you are allowed to turn over to your stomach. 2 - After turning to your stomach, you are allowed to take one single-arm or double-arm pull (I recommend a single-arm pull) 3 - After completing the arm pull (generally indicated by your pull hand or hands reaching your hip) - you must intiate the turning action 4 - You can complete the flip in any manner you desire but you must be on your back when your feet leave the wall. 5 - The entire turn must be one continuous motion. At no point can you just glide or even just kick. 6 - When any part of your body touches the wall, the continuous motion requirement for the turn is satisfied. Hope that helps
