Hello, I have had problems for many years with my left shoulder. I had arthroscopic surgery for impingement in 1990, and it has been sore when I swim on and off since then. I hurt my shoulder when swimming last summer and have not been able to swim since. I have been seeing an orthopaedic surgeon since last summer lots of injections and physical therapy - he now suggests surgery on my AC joint but I am not sure he fully knows what is wrong with my shoulder. Can someone please suggest a surgeon who is very well known to be a leader in shoulder surgery, especially for swimmers, who works in or near Maryland? Any help appreciated, thanks Paul. :bliss:
Try Dr Mustafa Haque in Chevy Chase. He is really nice, relatively young, understands swimmers, even does some swimming/tris himself. He was recommended to me by a friend (also a doc), because he did her husband's shoulder surgery. 301-657-9876 Summit Orthopedics.
I've had 4 shulder surgeries, 1 on the left and 3 on the right. My PT suggested I see the SF Giants orthopedist for the last one, Ken Akizuki, as he deals with over the head motion everyday with pitchers and players. It was an excellent choice - great experience with shoulders and working with athletes. While SF is a long way from Maryland, you might check out the orthopedist from the Orioles or the Nationals to see if they would work with you.
Nancy,
You beat me to it. I agree with your advice 100%. Major league baseball teams have a huge investment in their players and usually have excellent docs that also understand athletes and their desire to get back to competition. These docs also get the best radiologists to read the mri's (mine got sent to some docs at UCLA) and also work with great pt's. At least that has been my experience here in Denver.

if I had shoulder trouble I'd go see Austin Sports Medicine orthopaedic surgeons Dr Nathan Breazeale or Dr Doug Elenz (Doug operated on Lance Armstrong when he broke his collar bone),
I swam with both of them at UT

The belief that all things John Hopkins is grand is risky...from personal experience.
Dr. Jo Hannafin in NYC. www.hss.edu/physicians_hannafin-jo.asp
-->The only orthopedic I will ever use from here on out...def worth what would be a few hours drive for you...
She did both of my shoulder reconstructions and I was back in the water (swimming competitively) 2months post surgeries

And get a second opinion too, if you want peace of mind. Particularly a good diagnosis of exactly what is wrong through imaging, before you even begin to discuss whether you are going to go into the OR.

I have had 3 shoulder scopes, for 3 different injuries,I highly recomend Anthony Miniaci, Cleveland Clinic. Sorry I know Cleveland is a distance from Maryland.
