Just checked the results from the Italian Masters Championships -- interesting to see a different "population curve". I looked at the 50 Free and the participation in the younger age groups is massive. They had over 100 swimmers in all the younger age groups and then it tapers off starting at about 45 years of age. But 142 swimmers competing (Men) in the 30-34 age group alone ....

What is the variance between the mean and median distance traveled for our typical Nationals competitor?
I would say your comparison is invalid. My LMSC is larger than Italy with 2/5ths the population. Expand that out to the nation, and travel is a barrier to attendance in the US that it would not be in Italy.
Master's swimming may be more popular in Italy, but I don't think comparing the size of National's is valid. How about Membership/population?
