Masters Swimmers Acting Like Triathletes

Why does it appear many masters swimmers are taking USMS so seriously? What's the difference between the typical "selfish train all day", "it's all about me" triathlete and a masters swimmer who seriously trains as hard as they can.... particularly to focus on setting masters records? Seems like there is a growing parallel between triathletes and many masters swimmers these days. Isn't it just "masters swimming" for health and fun in the end? Does a masters record really mean that much? Is this a good thing? ..... or a turn off for those who look on with amusement.

images.huffingtonpost.com/.../s-MARIA-BELEN-CHAPUR-large.jpg For decency's sake, I had to use photoshop to change the object that she is holding in her hand. It is now our favorite Christian Conservative governor's "microphone" she is clutching with such manual tenderness in her hot but dainty Latin hands. Sadly, this photo doesn't show the tan lines he waxed so eloquently about...
  • It is just masters, so be as nutty, obsessive, and do whatever you want with your money, including buying the most expensive equipment out there. If you have a special attachment to your pull buoy, have it cast in platinum (platinum is impervious to chlorine). Since we all are adults now, we have learned that the only opinions that matter are our own, the person that signs our paycheck, and our significant other. Do what you want. Acting cool is for the middle school kids.
  • To each his/her own. This is a competitive sport after all. Not to be solely dominated by those with a past history. The average American spends 4 hours a day watching TV. Who knows how many hours in front of a computer. It is not only a good thing, but a commendable thing for adult swimmers invest time and effort into becoming healthy. Jane and Joe usms members who work hard and don speed suits are sooner or later going to take down a record held by an elitist who swam off of a talent base. That's just the way it is. And oh yes, good for them. Not shame on them. Elitists train, don speed suits and do not just swim from a talent base. Jane and Joe, pejorative appelations, may also be swimming from a talent base. Perhaps they trained wrong when young, had other priorities, were injured, chose other sports, or chose to attend college without swimming. Talent, just like records and tech suits, is not the sole property of former elitist has beens.

  • Jim, Next time, please feel free to mock geek. There is a lot of mocking to be had at this creampuff's wannabe expense. he is starved for attention. he is so starved that he unleashes creative insults(well, as creative as a unc grad can be) at members of this forum. his posts are his only way of getting people to pay attention to him, even if for a brief second. one day, this geek may find the ability to be half the woman that Fort is, but for now, he must sulk through his daily life as a shell of a man, attempting to lift himself up at be a bigger boy than he is. This way, you will be able to still express your right of freedom of speech, without getting bobby killeen's panties in wad. I am very reluctant to mock an ordinary gay woman like Geek. I think she is very brave to attempt to live her life as an ordinary straight man. I love both parts of the Geekish personality, and will savage neither of them.

I love both parts of the Geekish personality, and will savage neither of them. My greatest dissapointment in this very entertaining thread is that she (Geek) somehow seems to have gotten offended by the whole thing and bailed on us...I'm suffering withdrawls from my expectation of fiery Geekism's with such low hanging fruit (the discussion Jim, not what we saw in your Borat suit) for her to attack...did Geek ever bail on an Ion diatribe?
  • No, they are not. Ever. But they should not be objects of scorn or sources of amusement in the eyes of the elite swimmers. Of course they should...especially those sensitive types who like to post vanity shots of themselves and lie about stuff (lawyer up my ass..).
  • Wouldn't it then be called a pull anchor? All the better to train with it then. I suppose if it got to be too burdensome, one could retire it and place it alongside the many awards and trophies in the me-sanctuary.

Master swimmers with shark and/or bovine tattoo's that can't swim a 100 under 1:00 but have $500 LZR's Might this be what Mr. Negative was getting at? If so, god speed all of you masters swimmers who are supporting Speedo and Blue 70, therein supporting masters swimming. What I've learned from this thread. . . You need to be a certain level of *fast* according to some so as to *qualify* to buy the expensive toys whether it be a LZR, B70, or pair of fast wheels. . .
