Just Curious...

I'm wondering how many swimmers out there treat outer ear infections themselves (without a Dr. visit). I haven't gone to the Dr. for an outer ear infection since I was little. When I was swimming in high school and college I would use straight isopropyl alcohol before and after swimming if my ear hurt. It would always clear up in one or two days. I've sworn by that ever since. A couple of years ago, I mentioned that to a pharmacist while picking up a prescription med for my child's ear infection. The pharmacist seemed horrified that I would even think about using straight isopropyl alcohol on my child's ear infection. So I never have. Anyone else out there who has treated a sore ear this way??? I swear I learned this technique from a coach somewhere along the way...

My ENT said he'd be happy to keep collecting my co-pay otherwise straight isopropyl (as a preventative) was the way to go. That was summer of 2000, haven't seen him since. I'm thinking that once the infection is established, it can be very painful to drop in straight iso. I know i've done it a couple of times and flushed my ear out immediately with water from the tap to dilute it. Maybe that's why he was concerned about using it for someone elses ear(s)?
