I don't like much about my left side. It's less flexible, less dexterous and weaker than my right side. I have only 30% vision in my left eye and, if there is such a thing, I am more of a right brain person.
It's my left side that lets me down when I swim. My left arm doesn't extend as fully as my right arm. It's more of an effort to get into an EVF with my left arm than it is with my right. My left arm does things I don't want it to do like, scull outwards or pull under my body. It seldom finishes the underwater part of the stroke near my thigh, and instead opts for a easier exit near my midriff. Breathing to the left upsets my rhythm. The list goes on and on.
Two days ago I woke up with pretty sore right shoulder. It's nothing serious really, but just enough to make me feel uncomfortable in the water. I am not even sure how it happened. I might have slept awkwardly on it that night or it could have been the 100 reps I did on the military press machine (trying to make up for the scant amount of time I have spent in the gym lately). It may even have been my over zealous attention to straight arm recovery and meat hook freestyle in practice lately. I don't know, but it hurt enough to make me swim left armed freestyle and breaststroke for almost the entire practice yesterday.
It was exhausting. And it got me thinking. What if, for an entire month, I only did one armed freestyle? It would give my right shoulder time to heal and, hopefully, improve the strength and dexterity in my left arm. It would also help me improve my terribly weak kick. (I noticed yesterday that I had to kick continuously to keep my legs from sinking).
My question is: is there any value in this kind of isolation training? What, if any, are the caveats?
NO do not do 1 arm for a month! Work to make the stroke more balanced. Slow it down to work on it, then when you feel that it is better - speed it up. Good luck.
