Wonder who's going to make the team?
Does anyone know why there are no trials for 50s strokes?
The 50 of strokes are not events that are offered in Senior National Championships and have not been offered as far as I remember even before USA Swimming became the governing body of swimming and took over rules from the AAU. The 50 of strokes are only offered for the 10 years and younger and 11-12 age groups in USA swimming events.
The 50 Free did not become an event that was offered until 1980, when USA Swimming became the governing body of swimming. FINA started listing World Records in the event in 1980. One of the first early 50 meter US National Champions was Dara Torres in 1982, some 27 years ago.
In 1986, FINA started offering the 50 Free at the World Championships and it became an Olympic event in 1988. When the FINA World Cup started, FINA started keeping track of World Records in the 50 of strokes and in 2001 starting offering the 50 of strokes at the World Championships. The 50 of strokes, Women's 1500 Free, and the Men's 800 Free are events offered at World Championships but not at the Olympics.
My guess is that USA Swimming will fill the 50 stroke events with swimmers that are already on the team because that is what has been done traditionally. I have never heard of a reason to offer the 50 of strokes as separate events for swimmers to qualify for FINA World Championship events. Maybe in the future if these become Olympic events that might happen.
I have always thought that back in the past, 50's were viewed as wimpy and not real swimming events by the Swimming World. It took the IOC/FINA a long time to get the 50 Free on the Olympic program and that event was offered at both the High School and NCAA level since the early 1900's.
If you notice today, USA Swimming does not offer 50 of strokes past the age of 12 and USMS is the only organization in this country that offers them. In Europe, they are offered at all levels and countries keep track of records in both SCM and LCM for 50 of strokes at the age group and senior level of swimming.
GA Swimming offers 50s in all strokes at their LCM Senior State Championships.
Interesting. According to USA Rule 102.1 Events under .1 Senior Events, there are no 50s defined as events for both Long Course and Short Course. However, under.2 Age Group Events the 50 of strokes are listed as events offered in USA Swimming in the Part 1 of Technical Rules at the beginning of Article 102.
Perhaps you can offer them but they do not count for anything, like top 16 because they are not considered events as defined in the USA Rule Book as referenced on page 21 of the 2009 USA Rule Book.
Can someone explain to me how the USA 4x100 free is going to work now? Is it top six make the team? In that case, we have those six plus Lochte and Phelps. Eight guys. So if all of them swim, no one gets a chance to "prove it" in prelims and make the final? Who gets to be in the final, then? Lochte was barely faster than GWG, who has been much faster. Also, Lochte didn't man up and swim the final. Phelps has the slowest time this year of any of them, if I'm not mistaken. But, he's Michael Phelps...

Short version: because USA Swimming is run by distance snobs.

Nice explanation! But for real in a lot of cases there are people who are very good at 50 but not good enough for 100 and they do not get to go because of that stupidity. Lost medals for the states, after all gold for 50 *** is as good as 400IM gold.
Heck, there is a 31 year old winning the B-Final of the Women's 200 IM. :applaud:
Thanks for pointing this out, Tom. I searched for Erika Erndl here on usms.org and she swam at '06 Nationals in Coral Springs. Interestingly she only won one event there! She's obviously really recommitted herself to swimming to go a 2:13 long course 200 IM. That's a hell of a swim! At Coral Springs she swam the short course IM in a 2:11.
If a guy like Thomas Rupprath from Germany was from the USA, he might never go to World Championships .
Good call on Ruprath. One could make an argument that the 50 strokes are a more varied discipline from their 100 counter parts than the 200's are.
