Maybe someone here knows the best way for me to fix my son's brand new Speedo Endurance+ team suit. He wore it for the first time to a meet yesterday and proceeded to rip about an inch-long hole (not on the seam) on the inner leg when he was playing on the playground. My other son managed to sit in gum but he will have to learn to live with a gum spot. What luck!
Does anyone know of anything good to sew up or patch a tear? The suits are supposed to last two years and I hate flushing $30 down the toilet after one meet! Thanks!
As a seamstress I know that stretch knits like these are notoriously difficult to sew and virtually impossible to fix. BUT - if you have another suit with similar material that you don;t mind sacrificing, you could cut a circle of fabric about an inch bigger in diameter than the whole out of that fabric, then use washable fabric adhesive (or use masking tape) to stick it over the hole. Then use a ball point needle and darn (just keep sewing back and forth and around the edges) the patch onto the suit. trim away the excess fabric and hope for the best. It ain't gonna be pretty though. Some fabric stores sell stretch poly if you want to buy a scrap instead of cannibalizing another suit.
Just sewing the hole closed won't work because the stitches will just pull out or rip the fabric. You need another layer to hold the edges of the hole together
Or just use it as an "oversuit" for practice?
Those are my only suggestions - wish I had better news - maybe someone else will have something better!
My son had a rip in his lycra suit that I just stitched up on the sewing machine. It wasn't pretty but it worked. He got a few more wearings out of it but then he grew out of it.
Stitch it up and hopefully he will grow soon and you'll have to get a new one anyway.
I repaired a tear in a new fastskin by putting a patch cut from an old suit underneath and zig-zagging over the tear. It has passed the over-the-hips squeeze test. Not pretty but it works. Good luck!
Thanks! I knew there would be creative sewing minds on here!!! I'll give the suit cannibalization experiment a go :-)

Maybe use a Sharpie same color as the suit on the exposed skin. :D

have you considered returning it? It is reasonable to ask even if it was user error.
