  • Event 48 Men 40-44 100 Yard Backstroke ========================================================================= ZONE: Z 51.88 4/13/2008 Chris Stevenson, VMST-VA NATL: ! 49.40 5/4/2008 MICHAEL ROSS Name Age Team Seed Finals Points ========================================================================= 1 Ross, Michael 41 MESC 49.40 48.49! 9 23.41 48.49 (25.08) I beleive that Chris S. mentioned that this is the fastest that this event has EVER been swum by a USMS member. Period. The next fastest was Josh Davis' 49.12 at 08 SCY Nats. This swim was amazing. 26 strokes, that's all he took.
  • he broke a couple & smashed a few his 50 bk, 100 bk & 200 IM are likely to last for a while though I think Roque could get the IM Ross's 50 fr & 50 fl are at risk this season or next I'm sure Mike trains often, hard, far, & fast Maybe he's USMS's emerging over 40 male response to Dara. Though Dara's 50 times are like a over 40 guy going 18 high 19 low The times are impressive enough for a college swimmer, but at 41 years old. Wow. The 100 back time rivals most of the results in the 100 free. Wonder what his blog would look like?!

Hail to the Underwater King - As a fellow 40 year old and being close to a bunch of these records, I can only offer congrats to the short-course king in this age group -- 50, 100, 200 Free and Back --50 and 100 fly -- 100 and 200 IM -- that's 10 out of 18. Thank God for long-course ...

That is an amazing performance! Congratulations to Micheal. He has risen the bar and that is great for competition, this is something to appreciate and make us work harder. Rest assured, there are others who can get in the mix....some of us, just started on the road back and are closer than you may think....... :bolt:
  • Mike, It was wonderful to watch you swim. I think (hope) that your 50 Free will inspire me to work on my underwaters a lot more than I do (i.e almost never). While your 100 Back was amazing, I think that 50 free will stay with me for quite some time.
  • ... I think that 50 free will stay with me for quite some time. For those of us who weren't fortunate enough to be there, is there any video? Between Mike Ross's swims and Fort's backstroke and breaststroke swims it seems like there is lots of possible interesting video...
  • Thanks you. These are very kind words. I feel guilty that I don't blog, but I feel like I would be adding another hobby to an already long list. I don't mean to be secretive. Ande is partially right. No, not about the Dara analogies - Dara is really in a league of her own. He's right, her 50 IS like a guy doing an 18 or 19 in yards. I try to train often, aiming for 6 days a week and I try not to take off time between seasons. I do try to swim fast, frequently. There is some sprinting in every workout. Training far? Not by some standards. I train between 3000 and 4500, probably averaging 3300 per workout. Training hard? Probably not by most standards. Most of my training is low aerobic (E1 or 65% of max heartrate) and the rest is high-intensity anaerobic - things like 6x100s all out on 5-6 minutes or 8x50's all out on long rest. Mike Schmidt from Maine Masters is really the brains behind my training. He has been writing me workouts since we first met at Savannah a few summers ago. Schmidt is a smart guy who learned to be curious about swimming from Ernie Maglischo. By the way, if anyone is in contact with Ernie, please tell him that at least one master swimmer owes him a great deal of thanks. Ernie's book, Swimming Fastest, has answered enumerable questions that I have had and I recommend it to all. Thanks for sharing, Mike. I especially enjoyed the 100 back! Wish I could have seen the 50s ... would have enjoyed the 50 dolphin-free. Can I ask if/how often you're lifting and what % of your workouts are kicking? Any other cross training? Thanks for introducing me to Mike. His workouts sound fabulous, albeit painful.
  • Michael, WOW! I watched you and Chris S. race at the December SCM Zone meet @ Rutgers in the 100 back and was dumbfounded. I thought I had "seen" the best of your swims, but I was truly impressed with your 200 IM you did this weekend. I have only two requests: Post the occasional or typical workout here, and Don't swim the 400 IM or 400/500 free :)
