Masters groups in downtown Portland, OR

Hello-- I posted something in my blog here today about my trip to Portland next week, and it would be nice to find a masters group. Thought I may get more info by posting here. I'll be in Portland, OR from Mon Mar 30 (arrive around 4:30PM), until Thurs Apr 2 (leaving that afternoon). It is a business trip, but I should have time in the mornings/evenings to swim. I'm staying at the Embassy Suites, downtown Portland (319 SW Pine St), and am not planning to rent a car (get to/fr via MAX). My gym (24 Hour Fitness) does have a location in downtown Portland, just a few blocks from my hotel. If nothing else, I'll use that for treadmill runs/lifting/maybe swimming. Anyone have any info on masters groups in the downtown area and/or via a quick cab or with easy access via MAX? I welcome any suggestions or ideas. Thanks!

Tim - Have a look at the following website, which lists the training groups for OREG masters swimming: www.swimoregon.org/.../index.php I think limiting yourself to downtown will make it tough (probably only the MAC is a possibility), but if you're willing to drive 15-20 mins you can head east to Mt. Hood (Dennis Baker's group) or west to Tualatin Hills in Beaverton (Dave Radcliff's team).
  • Thanks for the replies. I'll contact the MAC and see what their policy is. Unfortunately, I won't have a car, so won't have a way to get outside of the downtown area.

I would try to get in a swim at the MAC - Multnomah Athletic Club. Mainly just for the experience of being inside the place. It is the absolute ultimate athletic club. A buddy who's a member got me in as a guest there for a swim last year. I don't know how they work the Masters courtesy swims but hopefully you can get one.
  • Tim, via Max you can get to the Barracuda's practice. Take Max blue line to the 185th and Walker Rd stop and walk a bit to get to the pool. It's not too far but my directions are off a bit since I've been gone for 3 years and drove there instead of taking Max. But if you go to the link below there is a link to the directions (click where it says TriMet). Practices are 5:15-6:45am M-F, 11:30-12:30, 12:30-1:30pm M-F and 7-8pm M-Th plus 6-7am Satudays. I think you'll enjoy the practices and you'll love the people. I'm jealous that you are going to my former home and might swim with my former team (but I'll be there at the end of April) www.thprd.org/.../home.cfm Alison

I just looked at the directions, and it looks like I'll have to swim in the evening, MAX wouldn't get me there for the 5:15 AM start time (probably for the best). I'll email the coach to get info on drop ins, fees, etc.
  • If I remember correctly, the drop in fees are $7 or $8. You just pay at the front desk. The team won't charge you anything, just the facility. Jon is a great coach - enjoy!
