I think it might be migrating to the back-to-*** turn used in high school meets where you don't have to touch the wall (on your back with your hand) before turning over, so you roll into the turn like the current backturn/flipturn, just coming off on your stomach.

Current National Federation of High School Rules require the finish of the backstroke leg of the IM to be on your back. Or vertical, not towards the ***.
