Hi Everybody,
A dear friend of mine, Norm Allish, passed away on 12 December. In his youth, he was a champion Canadian swimmer (prior to WWII) and was awarded a "Wrigley Cup" (pdf photos attached of Norm and his team). I guess that he was in his teens so the pictures are circa 1930. Norm was a great swimmer and went on to a career in aviation with his wife Beatrice. They retired to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. I met Norm and Beatrice thru masters swimming. He was quite a larger-than-life character.
I believe that he swam in the Phoenix USMS Nationals and in his 90's he was ranked in the top ten. He was also a striking figure in New Mexico Senior Olympics. He swam backstroke and freestyle and was known to wave at the crowd in the middle of his races. He was also known to kiss the timers after finishing!
Jordan and Marion Wolle (San Diego Swim Masters and Las Cruces residents) asked about the Wrigley Cup. If someone on this forum knows anything about the cup, could you please write to me.
I am truly honored to have known Norm and Beatrice.
Sincerely,
Philipp
Just guessing here, but the original Catalina swims (Catalina Island to the mainland) were sponsored by Wrigley (of chewing gum fame), so perhaps it is related to that.
LATER: Google to the rescue:

Go a little over 1/2 way down the page and then look under 1937 and 1942.
