I am trying to help a friend who is attempting an open water 7k lake swim in july. he wants to start training now. since i am only mid distance stroke swimmer, i have no idea what to tell him. remember he is a newbie and not a masters swimmer yet. he thinks he should just swim sets of 1000m . btw,he will be training in a hot 25 m pool.
i have never seen him swim so don;t know much about his stroke etc..
any advice would be deeply appreciated.
for the italian swimmers on this forum, you can pm me with instructions in italian as he is italian and i will pass it onto him.
thanks a lot
:)
Very briefly as I'm running out the door to work:
Make sure he does some shorter open water races (e.g., 1 mile, 3 mile) before he jumps headlong into a longer swim
Build to workout distance that are consistent with his race distance for at least 50% of his weekly workouts (e.g., if I'm trying to race a 3 mile o/w event, then 2 of my 4 workouts each week will be about 5K)
Determine if his target race is going to be in cold water and, if so, if he'll be wearing a wetsuit
Buy this DVD:www.totalimmersion.net/.../outside-the-box-a-total-immersion-program-for-success-in-open-water.html
will pass on the info thanks.
