Best Method to improve speed?

  • To me, the three ways to improve speed are: 1. Increase Strength--To an extent, being stronger will make you faster. This includes both in the water and dryland training. I think this is most relevant for sprinters. 2. Improve Technique--This is the most obvious, and probably most difficult, way to improve speed. 3. Improve Endurance--The better your cardiovascular fitness, the faster you will swim, particularly over distances exceeding 25s or 50s. Other things that might improve speed: A. Improve flexibility--This can help on starts, turns and kicking, in particular. Ankle flexibility has been cited as one of the many physical attributes Michael Phelps possesses that most mere mortals don't. B. Improve diet--I'm no nutritionist but I'm sure eating a balanced diet will help improve speed and build muscles. I'm sure there are others but those are what come to mind quickly.
