This thread should be changed from What's the longest butterfly race you could swim? It should have read What's the longest butterfly race you should swim?

There is a chance that I'd take advantage of the Masters rule that allows breaststroke kick.... There is a rule like that? Nah, I wouldn't do that, but I do have a question. Is it illegal to do more than one kick between arm strokes? That is currently the only way I can finish more than a 50 at the moment. I did attempt a 400 IM this week, and I finished it (yay!), but only with the extra kicks.

I saw a dude frog kicking during a 100 fly this weekend... I've never seen that in my life. I'm not sure I could even do that correctly, it seems like it would suck all the power out of the stroke.

The position of the legs or the feet need not be on the same level, but they shall not alternate in relation to each other. The breaststroke or whip kick may be used exclusively or interchangeably with the dolphin kick while doing the butterfly stroke at any time during the race. Only one breaststroke or whip kick is permitted per arm pull, except that a single breaststroke or whip kick is permitted prior to the turn and the finish without an arm pull. After the start and after each turn, a single breaststroke or whip kick is permitted prior to the first arm pull. A scissors kicking movement is not permitted.
  • I could probably only stay legal for about 200. in practice I have a hard time staying legal over 75m :whiteflag:
  • Following Creampuff's logic, I picked 50m. Anything longer than that, and my stroke isn't really racing, it's more 'mellow mode' (I have completed up to a 200 true fly). As for how long I could swim fly... using USMS rules and a breaststroke kick, however long my knees hold.

I feel like right now I could do an 800m fly...give me a few more weeks back in the water and the 1500m might be a possibility as well..I've only been back in for about 6 consecutive weeks (swimming 2 days a week ha)

If the question read, "What's the longest butterfly swim I could race," my answer to date would be the 100 yards. I'm going to try and race the 200 for the first time ever next month. Typically I loaf part to most of the 200.
  • I'm going to try and race the 200 for the first time ever next month. Go CreamPuff Go!!! :cheerleader:
  • I answered 400m since that's closest to my actual answer of 500 yards. I've done 500 fly in practice, though it wasn't pretty. If I can get to where I can swim 500 fly without feeling embarassed, I'll swim it in a meet. I suppose 400 SCM fly is a possibility as well. 400 LCM fly is not happening!:afraid:
