Vertical kicking is fine though I believe it's far better and more relevant to do
sprint kicks for time 15's, 25's, 50's, 75's, 100's, 150's & 200's
Kicking speed is a function of your:
+ push off or dive
+ streamline
+ body proportions,
+ kicking technique,
+ foot size and flexibility,
+ how much your knees hyperextend,
+ kicking conditioning,
+ psych, expectations, and mental toughness,
+ suit,
+ taper situation and
+ habits.
Vertical kicking might help conditioning but it's nearly impossible to measure performance other than saying you worked the set.
