Is it just me or does anyone else out there feel that they gave Phelps lame material to work with?

I missed the first half. I thought he did ok. It wasn't hysterical, but he wasn't too awkward. I thought the Charles Barkley skit was funny, and it allowed MP to stay in character. I'm sure their staff has made a career out of propping up non-acting hosts.
Lil' Wayne was so painful I had to change the channel.
I agree that he had lame material...I really didn't think last nights SNL was that funny at all...kinda a cruddy way to start their season. They could have done much more with MP. But, then again...he did stubble over the few lines that he did have several times...so maybe that has something to do with their choice in what scripts were used.
If they are looking for a swim star with any potential to have some comic skills, I think the best possible option would be Gary Hall Jr. MP does not have a colorful personality, so I wasn't expecting much.
Some of the skits seemed like re-done versions of older, better skits - but that happens after 35 years of going at things.

Yes, put on Hall Jr, known by dozens worldwide. I think putting on the third place qualifier at trials would have been a stroke of brilliance to bring in the viewers over the recent most successful Olympian ever.
The opening sketch with Poehler and Fey as Clinton and Palin was funny. Other than that it was virtually unwatchable.
The pepper smell in the restaurant skit was hard to watch. Do people actually get paid to write stuff like that?
Hate to say but I knew he'd be a bust.
The guy is beautiful to watch in the pool but is just a regular guy out of it. Yesterday I flipped through the Sports Illustrated special edition all on Phelps--GREAT shots in there. I would much prefer to look through that than watch SNL.
The problem is, no matter what content you gave him, it still wouldn't be funny. They wrote lots of content that had almost zero lines for him to say. He had perhaps 2 lines in each sketch that he was in.
