Her ability to perform in 2012 is probably 50% her ability to maintain the level of conditioning she has and 50% what the rest of the field does.
As impressive as I find a 41 y/o getting silver in the olympics to be, I am not certain what it really says about the rest of the US womens team - and other up and coming young swimmers. This might sound bad, but there is no logical reason why the younger swimmers can not swim faster. No doubt Torres is re-writing the history books and the way we look at athletic competition in general, but if there are not at least 5-10 women beating her by 2012 I think that speaks poorly of the future of USA women's swimming.
I agree - if the USA doesn't have a bunch of under 30s that can beat Dara then USA swimming has a problem. Assuming that Dara's performance is clean (and I see no reason not to believe it) some of the younger USA swimmers could take a fresh look at their training and spend the next four years doing something new.
