I found this forum after finding out US Masters Swimming existed (and in my area - Northwest New Jersey). I've contacted one of the ones in charge and hopefully, after paying for the membership for the Y, will be able to start the end of September.
After reading some of your posts, I think I have waited WAY to long to get back into swimming. Had a great start - started swimming competitively when I was 5. By high school, I was working full-time, swimming and training horses, and well .... should have stayed off one of those horses. After breaking my back, well, gave up competitions and just swam for fun when I had the time.
After reading about all of this, I am very excited. I haven't heard back from the New Jersey group yet, but is this something that is usually just open to everyone? Are there try-outs to see if I have what it takes? Swimming competitively at 50 sure isn't gonna be the same as swimming at 5!
Oh my - I am so excited - but also a tad nervous - but overall, more excited than nervous! Anyway - Just wanted to say hi and look forward to getting to know many of you!

Welcome to the Madhouse Janice....Glad to have you here!!!!
Usually there is not a try out for masters team, so no need to worry about being cut, they are just looking to see how your stroke is so they know or where they can help you, also about nerves, don't worry they will calm down. There alot of great resources with USMS. There are meets all of the time, and it's really up to you how far that you want to take it.
Thank you. I just can't believe how excited I am. My daughter is laughing at me! This just sounds like so much fun - wish I had known about a long time ago!

Welcome,
No try-outs, if you swim, you have what it takes! I can give you a contact if you haven't heard back from the Masters group yet.
Last spring the coached Masters met two evenings a week, haven't seen the fall schedule yet but it'll probably similar. Some folks also meet weekdays and saturday mornings for uncoached workouts.
It a great time to get back into swimming, there's an Adult Freestyle Clinic on Sept 24 (its offerd several times a year if you miss this one)

And on Oct 19 there's the "Just Do It" Adult mini-meet (USMS membership not required). Its a quick, low key meet, 50s & 100s of each stroke, a 200 IM and 200 Free Relay. There's a short orientation session (optional) for first time swimmers and/or those not familiar with the meet format. Its great meet to get back into competitive swimming.
