It occurred to me today that it might be interesting to run an experiment at Nationals. The question to try to answer is whether or not officials can see a dolphin kick before the pull on breaststroke starts and/or turns. To answer this you'd need some volunteer swimmers who a decent breaststrokers, the requisite bevy of officials and one person to decide randomly if any given person will use an early dolphin kick, a legal dolphin kick or no dolphin kick on each start or turn. Each swimmer would start from the blocks, swim one length + one turn and pull out. The officials would mark who they saw do early dolphin kicks. After a number of runs, you compare what the random decider person had each swimmer do and what the officials marked.
