Phelps just smashes the 400IM world record (4:03.84) and crushes the rest of the field. Second place Laszlo Cseh 2.32 seconds behind him. Not sure what happened to Lochte, though. He didn't even feature at 4:08.09.
If this is indicative of what is to come from Phelps for the rest of the games then it is going to be awesome to watch. He is just so far ahead of the rest of the pack. He ain't human!
All we could say after that race was "Oh my!!" That was dominant. I confess I was rooting for Lochte and got excited coming out of the backstroke, but Michael just turned it on and owned the race the rest of the way. This will be a great series of races for him if he keeps bringing it like that.
He is definately not human...
Seriously though, he is so mentally tough. And he still has that young kid look on his face...like he's not been there before!
I'm convinced if he wanted the breastroke records, he would take them. That's the impression I get. It would mean discrading alot of other training.
No way ... he is extremely talented (obviously) but there is no way he could hang with Hansen/Kitajima/etc. in breaststroke. I think he has said he wants to final at Nationals - that I'm sure could happen.
Is it just me or was the anthem really screwed up for Phelps medal ceremony? It sounded like the beginning was cut off, then it seemed to repeat once and then was cut off at the end?
It was probably done on purpose since it was the American anthem.
Great race. What I like is that he and his coach knew that he was going to have to work on that breaststroke in order to dominate. And he was able to swim a personal best interval on the breaststroke. Gold and a Bronze, good work from both he and Lochte.
I also like Cseh's strokes. Shows that skinny guys can still swim extremely fast.
