Pat Gallant Charette of Westbrook, Maine, had to terminate her attempt on August 1 after swimming 32 miles (the crossing is 21 miles) in 16 hours because she could not break through the currents on the last 2 miles on the French side. She asked for ice in her drinks during nutrition breaks.

According to the top page of USMS site, most Channel crossers this year will be making the attempt between August 7 and 16, so there will be more drama in the news.

I train with Catheryne Di Prete, who left for the UK on Friday and will be making her attempt during the August 7-16 window. She's an incredibly talented, dedicated and driven swimmer. She's been a personal inspiration to me (not to swim the Channel, but definitely to work hard for my goals). ....
Reading Marcia Cleveland's Dover Solo and Lynne Cox's Swimming to Antarctica certainly made me focus on having a swimming goal, and how to get there. That in turn has helped my coach design workouts. And there is much carryover to other goals in life.
