How hot is too hot for you?

.... and another thing... How warm does the water in your pools get in the summer? I am finding that the older I get (I'm 45 now) the less tolerance I have to swimming hard sets in hot water. It is as though my muscles are lulled to sleep, and at the same time that my heart starts pounding to hard to be able to put together a quality set. I need way more rest after hard 100s/200s and my endurance or ability to hold a decent pace on 400s+ seems to vanish. I start noticing this effect at 83 degrees. By 87 degrees, i might as well do the whole workout = drills and breath control. By October things have cooled down enough to not feel like I am hard boiling my eggs any more, and by December my pool is in the low to mid 70s again...so I'm happy again. So, how hot are the pools you are swimming in, and do you have the same issues with warm water affecting your workouts as we do???
  • I did a set of 5x500s in 91 degree water a few weeks back--I think I had a vision. That is really, really funny.
  • Lefty - When I swam there, the aerator had not been used. When I first moved here in 94 the first colony aquatics center had an aerator but would not run it during the day for safety concerns. I tried swimming the club there but the water was just too hot for it to be worth it. Later I joined the under water hockey team that played at the pool after all swimmers had finished at 7:30 pm and the water was a little more pleasant. Best water temperature I have found in Houston has been in the Lifetime Fitness lap pool. Theoritically it is only used for lap swimmers while the noodlers and open swim are supposed to use the family pools.
  • I had a similar experience trying to get my daughter's membership cancelled (membership was a vain attempt to get one of my daughters off of her crack pipe...um I mean cell phone). Still LA fitness fulfills that need for a 2 am swim after the hoard of belligerent drunks is through retching beer and bratwurst all over my birkenstocks (like the alliteration?).

People say how terrible they feel when it is hot. Generally, I don't believe them. I love it at 93 to 100 with humidity. Today though I rode my bike home and did feel uncomfortable. There is nothing like being on a beach or poolside being wet and then go run into the water. I tease that my jobs in Hell will be waiting at the Devil's restaurant on the patio on Mother's Day. That is my job I will have to pay the rent. My real job will be answering the Devil's switch board listening to everyone complain about the heat and not being able to get their calls threw. I used to work in a restaurant in DC. I would go set up the patio in the middle of July to August sure that some one would want to eat out there. No one ever did. Every night, I was so disappointed.
