How hot is too hot for you?

.... and another thing... How warm does the water in your pools get in the summer? I am finding that the older I get (I'm 45 now) the less tolerance I have to swimming hard sets in hot water. It is as though my muscles are lulled to sleep, and at the same time that my heart starts pounding to hard to be able to put together a quality set. I need way more rest after hard 100s/200s and my endurance or ability to hold a decent pace on 400s+ seems to vanish. I start noticing this effect at 83 degrees. By 87 degrees, i might as well do the whole workout = drills and breath control. By October things have cooled down enough to not feel like I am hard boiling my eggs any more, and by December my pool is in the low to mid 70s again...so I'm happy again. So, how hot are the pools you are swimming in, and do you have the same issues with warm water affecting your workouts as we do???
  • On a good day in winter, my Y is 83-84. I have adjusted well to that. In summer, however, it gets hard to tolerate. I can do a fairly good workout at 85, a modified workout at 86. I don't bother if it gets to 87.
  • Is there a pool in Houston that is under 83? I remember back in the 70s when they put couple of tons of ice in the DADs Club pool for the age group long course championships between the prelims and finals. It still felt like bathwater
  • When the water gets too hot just think of it as the Bikram Yoga equivalent for swimming. :)

Winters in Michigan 83 is just fine. In Houston I think I would just go home if the pool was 83.

Indoor Y pool--84* I can never "cool down" and wind up cooling off in a cold shower instead.
  • I don't bother if it gets to 87. I learned this lesson yesterday. Went to the beach (Evanston, IL). All beaches were closed due to e. coli, so I toodled on over the the local LA Fitness(*). The pool temp was 87. I should have brought a bar of soap. I did all of 700 yards. Skip (*) BTW, if you ever, ever, ever think you might want to join LA Fitness, google for cancel membership LA Fitness first.
  • I did a set of 5x500s in 91 degree water a few weeks back--I think I had a vision.

Word on LA fitness; went there (Glendale, AZ) 3 days ago--1) 85 degrees, 2) 0 visibility, and 3) enough chlorine (or chloramines) to make me need an oxygen tent. I would have contributed to the mess with a fresh dump in the pool but unfortunately I have a shy rectum.:bitching:

AmEx and probably most credit card cos. will issue a one-use-only number such that there can be no automatic renewals against that number. Regards, VB

It still felt like bathwater That same pool was 81 last weekend when I swam in it. And I am 4 minutes away so I can check again if you would like! I think it is because of the air-raters (have no idea how to spell that). They work
