The tragic death of a South Carolina 10-year-old more than an hour after he had gone swimming has focused a spotlight on the little-known phenomenon called “dry drowning” — and warning signs that every parent should be aware of.
“I’ve never known a child could walk around, talk, speak and their lungs be filled with water,” Cassandra Jackson told NBC News in a story broadcast Thursday on TODAY....

Hmm? Interesting. One would think that decreased lung capacity would be most dangerous while the body is being stressed (swimming?) and not while sleeping.
This boy actually drowned. He did not dry drown. Dry drowning is caused by spasms in the larynx closing the airway (or by the shock of cold water stopping the heart as the other theory has it). www.snopes.com/.../drydrowning.asp
My real mom was a ER nurse. I remember once when I was a little kid, her coming home very upset because one of her coworkers had a son drowned. He had been swimmign and took a nap. He never woke up. I don't remember the detail but I think his lungs were almost completely full of lake water. I wish I coudl remember more but the age of 4 was a long time oga.
