I am relatively new to swimming. My question is how quickly you lose fitness during a layoff? I have been sick and my first instinct is to get back in the pool quickly. Any thoughts?

Hi Adam,
I would just play it by ear, and try not to overdo it for the first few days. Depending on how sick you were, you may feel better before you are 100%. Basic maneuvers like walking help tone and get things working harmoniously again. You still have the neurological patterns intact, presumably, which are part of swimming. Muscular strength and general capacity will return. So by all means get in the pool and enjoy it.
Good luck!
