I am relatively new to swimming. My question is how quickly you lose fitness during a layoff? I have been sick and my first instinct is to get back in the pool quickly. Any thoughts?

Whining and complaining are a necessary part of a successful taper.Reading these forums there seems to be a direct relationship between speed and whining.For LCM Nats I plan to start serious whining about 4 wks before the meet this year,but I'll do some practice whines now in then to keep in practice.
