I am relatively new to swimming. My question is how quickly you lose fitness during a layoff? I have been sick and my first instinct is to get back in the pool quickly. Any thoughts?

I've heard it takes 21 days to begin losing what you've built up, but not completely obviously. Sprinters don't have much to begin with so they lose it in about 3-4 hours.
