great swimmers want to train
with other great swimmers
for a great coach
in a great facility
shanteau arrived in Austin as an IMer, then in the 200 LCM ***, he dropped from 2:17 to 2:10, giving him a way better chance than trying to edge out phelps and lochte in the IMs
last year spann was 2:14, he made phenomenal improvements,
Randy Reese coached him in high school, Bowman coached him at Michigan then Eddie coached him when he transferred to UT
Many top recruits come to Austin to represent UT and be coached by Eddie, they like it and stay after they graduate
Many more TXLA swimmers didn't make the US Olympic Team
Also don't discount UT's womens program
they have some excellent recruits coming in
Matt,
Perhaps critical isn't the right word to use.
TXLA with 8/22 had 36.4% of the mens team. The four teams with 2+ qualifiers had 15 swimmers, 68% of the team. It is a matter of numbers and stats.
11 clubs qualified one male swimmer for the Olympics. That doesn't tell me that it is CRITICAL to swim for TXLA if you want to go to the olympics. However, the fact that TXLA has 8 swimmers going tells me there is a high CORRELATION with that program and Olympic berths.
