  • Doesn't work that way. Lochte will almost definitely swim the relay but unless you swim it in finals there are no guarantees. Vendt will be named to the relay team - think Coughlin in 04 and Phelps with the 100 in 04. The coaches can put anyone on the relay the so desire including any swimmer that did not contest the event at trials. Typically they put the top two (the two that swim it individually) and the two fastest from the morning. In 04 the neither Coughlin nor Sandeno swam on the prelim team but swam on the final relay team. Benko was one of the two individual swimmers but said she wasn't swimming as fast as she thought others could and declined the night spot and only swam on the prelim team. Then it was the fastest one from the morning - Piper and Vollmer the other individual qualifier.
