Day Three
To add to yesterdays results
Larry Krauser swim a 58.78 in the 100 free for first. He was tied with Alex Mills (Norway), then came back to edge him by a half second.
James Elder 65-69 won the 100 free with a 1:02.85. Dan Willert came in third 1:06.09.
Graham Johnson went a 1:12.49 to win his division. He was second at the turn and came back to win by four seconds.
Ahelee Sue Osborn, one of the American coaches (and coaches at Nova Aquatics) wone the women's 50-54 200 backstroke. Karen Sing took third.
Today's results:
Rich Burns (TAM) was touched out in the 200 back 2:24.19 (0.03 behind first).
Ken Frost at the high end of his age group won the 200 free by a body length at 2:30.81.
Laura Val won the women's 200 free (55-59) 2:18.11.
One of the featured heats of the day was the fastest heat of the women's 200 Freestle. Suzanne Heim-Bowen (who had already won two gold medals), Jenny Whiteley of New Zealand and local favorite Shane Gould. Everyone knew it would be a barnburner race and they were not disappointed. Suzanne led from wire to wire. Everyone was close for the first lap, then Suzanne gradually pulled ahead. At the finish Suzanne was two body length ahead of second place Jenny Whitely and Shane Gould. To win the heat, Suzanne had to break the Laura Val's world record - she swam it at 2:15.00 - Gould came in at 2:17.21
Later, in the afternoon, Shane won the 50 fly. Karen Sing came in 4th (33.48)
In the fastest heat of the Mens 200 (50-54) Dan Stephenson (Michigan Masters) led from lane 4 wire to wire in a blistering 2:00.84. Outside burner (lane 1), John Morales (SRM) came in third at 310.61 and Jim Montgomery of Dallas Masters 7th at 2:12.42.
Bev Montrella took 4th in the 400 IM.
Fred Farley of Manatee Masters came in third in the 400 IM and Shariar Azafar (Santa Clara Masters) took fifth (50-54).
TriValley Mens water polo team is 1-2. Their two losses have been by one point.
Tomorrow is the 50 Free, 200IM , 100 Fly and 50 ***.
All the information is from my notes of what I have seen and reports from the American Coaches. I am sure I have missed a few swims. The results are $1.00 an event and I will just wait for on-line information. I have enjoyed watching some great races.
The American coaches have done a great job of taking splits and encouraging swimmers. There are many Americans to watch. The coaches purchased heat sheet, then marked all the American swimmers, so it is easy to see who will be swimming in which lane. With two pools you cannot see everything. I watched Ken Frost win his event, and raced over to the women's course and just missed Laura Val winning her 200 Free.
Tomorrow evening, the US swimmers will have a dinner together at a Fremantle pub. There have been a couple of swimmers who have used this trip as a fact finding mission - they have been tasting many of the local brews, and then reporting to the rest of us. It is so much easier sampling the local beer if you dont have to work your way through the swill. ( they have reported on some very good Aussi brews).
