Why do we continue to lead off the 2nd,3rd and 4th days of the meet each year with a distance event? I can think of NOTHING more deadening to the atmosphere of a swim meet than dozens of heats of 400IM and 500 free. We need to start the meet with the 50 freestyle and get the place rockin' !! Stick the long events at the end of the meet each day after the relay and give the majority of participants the opportunity to spend less time at the pool.

John,
go away quietly or my distance buddies and I will beat you to a pulp in Austin.
As`is always the case with Mr. cheater/ALS there is a "true" story behind the story.
Wimpy is all upset that he entered his signature event (the 200 free) for the first time in years...even sandbagged his time to get away from the middle of the pool (and being my ski boat)....now he see's the meet will go till 8pm that night and the horrid lack of sleep he will experience is going to disrupt his 100 free the next day...waaahhh!
Distance Man pick on Hulk's sprinter friend, Hulk angry, Hulk tie puny Distance Man into pretzel.
Hulk
Oh, phhhht! I ain't scared o' you Hulk. I can lift my body weight & I'll bet you can't (hmmm, you may be able to lift mine though). Besides, you'll just be your alter ego the whole time in Austin.
P-L-E-A-S-E....... No one cares about the distance events. They take way too long and require too much attention span.
Face it, the only reason they put them at the beginning of the meet is so they can get some audience roped in to watching them.
There would be no one in the facility if they were at the end of the meet.
Let's change the name from distance events to "Meet Killers".

Just remember to bring along your ADD medications to Austin and you'll be able to watch 100 of any distance event. By the way, is that why you had to have a person with placards telling you which stroke you were swimming during your 100IM race in Denver?
Ande's suggestion is better. Perhaps we should get rid of the distance people and send them off to their own meet.
Then Ande wouldn't have anyone to drink with. Sprinters are well known internationally for being able to down 1 beer in 4.25 seconds and then immediately passing out.
I've noticed there are fewer and fewer people around for the 1500 or 1650 if it is the last event. Most of the people around are those who are waiting for their heat. By the last heat the place is usually deserted. At one meet they started pulling the touch pads out of adjacent lanes while I was still swimming.
