Todd Smith resignation?

As Executive Director of USMS in less than a year? www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../17769.asp So what's scoop?
  • Most people in the business world know that about 2/3 of all management hires don't work out within one year, for many reasons. Just a fact of business. Last year, the CFO we hired didn't make it through the 90-day try-it-before-you-buy-it period and we were w/o a CFO for a bit. Will this position cycle through the Smith Clan? Who is next? Paul? Or John? John? Or Paul? Lest ye forget George and Ringo! The basic question is ....... Why wasn't the position he accepted with USMS THE position he couldn't refuse? I mean really..... this is a giant waste of time for USMS to have to keep looking for candidates. I vote we stick Mark Gill in there and be done with it. Good point, John. I get the feeling that USMS is kind of shooting in the dark with regards to their goals and hoping that whomever they bring in will at least bring in some fireflies to make target practice a bit more productive. It sounds like Todd had made some suggestions and was working on some projects, so if the BOD feels these are worthwhile, they should have a bit better idea of what/who they'll be looking for. As for hiring the man w/ a great last name for a swimmer, what I had heard was that they were looking for someone outside the current governing body, so obviously Mark doesn't quite fit that bill. Otherwise, assuming he's happy to give up his day job, I'm right there with you on that one!
  • Otherwise, assuming he's happy to give up his day job, I'm right there with you on that one! Why in the world would Mark want to give up a cushy academic position? (Insert heavy sarcasm at will.)
  • Sorry, nothing Machiavellian here. Todd was settling in nicely as our first ED. When out of the blue Duraflex approached him and offered Todd a job. Todd was not looking for a new job, but Duraflex offered him significantly more money in a sport where he has a deep passion and a wealth of knowledge. One reason the original announcements seem to be holding something back, is because they were. Out of respect to Todd and Duraflex, we intentionally did not disclose where Todd was going. So instead of being able to say “Todd Smith has resigned as executive director, to become a VP at Duraflex” we said “Todd Smith has resigned as executive director”, which begs the question; why? As a non-Olympic governing body, we don’t have the financial resources to make anyone an offer they can’t refuse. And beyond this, we are run by a bunch of very passionate volunteers, which comes along with its own set of challenges. During his short time with USMS, Todd made a number of significant contributions that helped move us down the path to become a better organization. He was an asset to USMS and his experience will be missed. And I hope he has great success with Duraflex.
  • ...what I had heard was that they were looking for someone outside the current governing body... The search committee has received applications from a number of people from inside and outside the swimming community. We are not limiting the search in any way. And we are in no way discounting candidates from within Masters Swimming.
  • I keep trying to change my governing body, but these pounds aren't coming off quick enough! :p Tracy- I agree, we need Mr. Moose. I "moose" him. Has anyone checked "Moossissippi" or "Moosouri"?
  • Paul, have a look at these minutes: www.usms.org/.../bod-2008-2-8-1.pdf Sorry to see him go but it looks like nothing sinister afoot. Mel, not trying to imply anything sinister...but very curious for a bit more info. Maybe he did get a better offer...what was it? It took USMS a long time to find the person for this job and he jumps ship that quickly...then he was probably not the right person to begin with.
  • Two people on my team are putting in for this position.

I thought this same thing when I heard the news. I also wondered what we paid the headhunters the first time, whether we are using the same group this time around, and whether we are paying a second time. I don't think we got a whole lotta bang for our buck.

Probably not necessary to read something sinister into this but that's the mode on this forum these days. Especially when you hire someone from the diving world to run a swimming organization. Only partly joking here.
