Procedure for getting USA-S Times to count for USMS Top 10
Former Member
How does one go about getting USA-S times to be submitted and to count for USMS Top 10? I have concerns about how difficult this process will be due to pool measurement and other requirements, etc.
I want to swim the 1500 LCM this summer and there is not one masters meet in my area that offers that event this summer. The closest meets are 8+ hours drive away in FL in July and I'd much rather swim that distance in a climate controlled environment. :frustrated: USA-S meets in my area offer this event. I'm already registered with USA-S.
Thanks for any ideas. I will plan on contacting one USAS/USMS official that I know personally. But was curious if anyone knew the exact (or even vague outline) process.
Really, my biggest concern is having to swim fast on such a big time zone change. Oh, and it's not an indoor climate controlled pool. But I could live with that I think.
The time change shouldn't be a huge factor, I don't think. It's probably better to go west than to go east. At least when the meet starts at 9 a.m. it will feel like noon to you, not the middle of the night.
Obviously there are no guarantees with the weather, but summers in the Pacific Northwest are usually incredible. It can get hot in Portland, but we're talking 90 degrees and the word "muggy" is seldom used. What we consider to be hot out here is typically laughed upon by most other parts of the country. I'm not kidding when I say people start complaining about the "oppressive heat" when the temps stay above 80 for a few days in a row.

As a former Oregonian and now living in Virginia, I will concur with Kirk. Come on out to Oregon and enjoy the beautiful, low humidity weather, scenery that can't be beat and super nice people.
Awesome answers. Thank you very much!!
Ed Saltzman was the individual that I was planning on contacting as I know him. So I'll start with him. Thanks so much Glider. So sorry that your Top 10 did not get to count! :shakeshead: It hurts so bad does it not? I know it will motivate you to earn some more!
Ande, thanks so much. I printed out your email letter as a template for me.
Chris, great link. Thank you. I'm hoping since it will be long course season that the pool measurements will be on file and no bulkheads will be involved. But I will be sure to check as this issue got me before! Glad I'm not my area Top 10 recorder. I think you'd suddenly see me at #1 place across the board!! :joker:
Kirk and Winnie, how nice. I didn't think anyone would care if I went to Nats or not. I'm still thinking about it. Really, my biggest concern is having to swim fast on such a big time zone change. Oh, and it's not an indoor climate controlled pool. But I could live with that I think. It would be nice to have a meet in August. I could possibly do SR State in GA in July and then Nationals.
Gracias!!! I feel a bit better about all this.

Since I am both the LMSC Top Ten person and I swim in USS meets, I've had to deal with this issue quite a bit.
The procedure is really exactly the same as in a masters meet:
-- Your Top Ten person has to be aware of the swim so s/he can include it with the other Top Ten time submissions.
-- Make sure the pool measurement certification is on file with the national office; if not, get the pool officials to do the measurements.
-- If the pool has a movable bulkhead, then pool distance must be confirmed in the outside lanes and a middle lane. This needs to be done after each session for which you want to submit times.
The main thing is to get your Top Ten person involved in the process beforehand, because s/he is the one who will be sending in the swims. S/he will know if the pool measurement certification is already on file. If the pool doesn't have movable bulkheads, then you are pretty set, just get the results submitted to him/her. Otherwise, get the measurements done and have them sent along with the results (ideally a link to a Meet Manager file posted online).
The LMSC Handbook has all this information (and much more). Here is a link:
www.usms.org/.../
The important information is in the "Top Ten / Records & Tabulations" link. Presumably your Top Ten person is already well aware of the contents!

Don't you want to take your summer vacation to beautiful Oregon? Come on, long course nationals are going to be a blast!
This information is highly suspect...There was some sort of change in the DZ and resulting confusion on this this past summer/fall.
Andy, a great guy btw, is not the right guy. This cost me a Top Ten this last SCM season.
I was told I should have gone to Ed Saltzman! I'd call him and confirm.
Top ten times are submitted at the LMSC level, not the Zone level. The GA LMSC officers are at
georgialmsc.googlepages.com/aboutthegeorgialmsc
Ed Saltzman is indeed listed as the Top Ten person. Contact the LMSC chair if there are any difficulties.
The Safety & Long Distance Officer looks a little familiar too...can't quite place the name... :)
Come to Oregon. I will even count for you! My husband and I are planning to tour the state after the meet....Mt. Hood, Crater Lake, the coast etc.
Glad you are swimming so well. THe skiing has been awesome...expecting more snow in the mountains this week. I am off to practice now in Denver.
