My 14 year old daughter just recently swam a 50 freestyle at 24.55. Unbelievably she took 9 breaths!!! Doesn't that seem like a lot of breathing for a 50? Does anyone have any imput? thanks, Whitney

Your daughter might enjoy this. The girls are swimming roughly her same speed. I showed this to my kids for them to get a look at some serious underwater work in the 50 (Lane 4). She took one big gulp before the wall...dolphin kicked like crazy...and paddled back with no breathing. Loved seeing that the good old fashioned track start is still alive. www.youtube.com/watch Great video. Thanks for posting. Was it just me or did the eventual winner have the worst start off the blocks? Looked like she was behind until after her turn and SDKs. If she fixed the reaction time to the buzzer and her start, she would have been even faster.

If she fixed the reaction time to the buzzer and her start, she would have been even faster. You're welcome. From my take on this...the grab start is slower in terms of reaction time & hitting the water...but the force generated from the two legged push makes it an even entry when they breakout. (This could start a whole new thread.) But anyway...Lane 4 is a little smaller in height than the other girls. (This could be why they got some more distance at the entry.) And if you really want to see a good race...her 100 back was exceptional...www.youtube.com/watch
  • I don't swim 50 free much at meets, but when I do I try to not breath the first 25 and take one breath the second.

I practice with a gal Haley Chura (recent UGA Swimmer Grad) who does exactly that kind of SDK. Back is her best stroke. She qualified for Trials this year.
