The Brits this year introduced a decathlon competition, see
www.britishswimming.org/.../0,10853,5157-183850-201068-nav-list,00.html
The event is based on an age adjusted scoring system. Total score is based on points from up to 10 events, up to 2 each taken from 6 groups: 4 strokes 50-200, distance free and IM.
Scottish swimming has been doing this for a while.

Do any of the regions of USMS do something similar? Is there interest in introducing a USMS decathlon?

The Allegheny Mountain YMCA Masters Swimming Association www.amymsa.org has a similar concept called the High Point Competition. Points are awarded for placement within age and gender brackets. The points accumulate throughout the season - Sept through March.
There is also the Iron Person Competition (similar to the USMS checkoff challenge)
And the Marathon Swim, in which you tally you total yardage (from practice, etc.) during the season. (similar to USMS Go the Distance) Points are awarded for being the first in your age group to complete the Iron Person
Competition.
