Well, I guess cheating with a wetsuit is cheaper and safer than steroids and HGH. Sheesh. Officials couldn't possibly police that. Swimmers would have to complain. That'd make meets real fun. Turn people in and squabble about their "suit." Ugh.
Yeah, you'd hope this would be something that could be self-policed. Nearly everyone knows wearing a wetsuit is illegal in a pool event.
By my interpretation, 102.15.9 does not apply to swim suits per se. Swimwear is given its own section in 102.14. I think of a device as a watch or something similar.
I agree. This rule is meant to discourage swimmers from strapping, say, a small outboard motor to their rear end.;)

Those aquasphere suits make a huge difference. I wore the bottom one for a 4 mile swim and each mile was under 32 minutes--and i normally swim a 34 or 35 minute mile.
do we have any volunteers to serve as female suit inspectors
making sure suit fabric is appropriately thin
How does one really differentiate a Fatskin versus a wetsuit?
Other than buoyancy, the rule book doesn't offer a clear written description. Or does it?
In my opinion the definition is a bit on the weak side.
Maybe the thickness of the suit should be included as part of the criteria.
I don't think so but it might be fun to have an "anything goes" category in swimming,
where swimmers could use
fins, paddles, neoprene suits, fake nails, steriods, hgh, & uppers
Are wetsuits legal at meets?! A swimmer was spotted in a wetsuit before the 400 IM at my meet this week. Seems like a lot of float ...

Surely by this definition even a fastskin isn't permitted because I have heard a fastskin can reduce your time by at least half a second? Shouldn't the rules be more specific and actually mention wetsuits by name?
Syd
Fastskin will be never banned because The Big Names Company are the main sponsor of the swimming world, and the Fastskins are a big business, maybe the main business today.
Maybe it's the time to modify the rules book officially to include it, because :
102.15.9—Swimmers are not permitted to wear or use any device or substance to help their speed, pace or buoyancy during a race...
and looking at the marketing The Fastskins are built to reduce the drag -> help the speed, or not ?

This is crazy indeed. He shouldn't have even been let on the blocks, and then certainly DQ'd. I try to let most stupid stuff go at meets, but I wouldn't have let this go. I can say I've never even seen this.
We wished you wre there...we could have been a united front for a brief "Christmas Truce" like in WWI.
